In early 1991, wanting again, after a long hiatus from dog shows, to compete in AKC obedience, we purchased "Spanky Lee" an American Staffordshire Terrier who was born and bred in Texas. (See the "Dearly Departed" page) Spanky taught us a LOT about training Terriers! It is often said "Am. Staffs" are a lot like potato chips....you can't just have one. Such was the case for us and it started our life long devotion to this wonderful breed, "whose courage is proverbial."
Newbies in any breed of dogs need mentors, or people who have vast amounts of knowledge about the breed, and we had our share. We thank them wholeheartedly for their time and patience, including: Sara Nugent, Phil & Anne Lyons, Greg & Frances Connor, and others too numerous to name.
Our love of this breed has led us to be long time members of our National Club, the Staffordshire Terrier Club of America of which I am the current Secretary. We are also members and past or current officers of our local club: The American Staffordshire Terrier Club of Riverside/San Bernardino. Additionally, we are members and I am an officer of our local all breed dog club: The Lake Matthews Kennel Club. I also do some "dog" writing and judging occasionally.
The future of this special breed, as well as many other "endangered" pure bred dogs rests in education. In that regard, we participate in as many "Meet the Breed" events as we are invited, and try and keep current to help fight local and National breed specific legislation.
The future of this somewhat "rare" breed is also directly tied to its owners. Ownership of this breed entails a life long commitment to educating others about the many positive aspects of an American Staffordshire Terrier, as well as training your Am. Staff to always be a canine "good citizen". Special thanks to the owners and friends of ALL of our Cabin Creek American Staffordshire Terriers who have given our pups such wonderful homes, and have taken on that commitment and devotion to this breed.
